World-class Animal Care

We appreciate Ocean Park’s culture and staff which are dedicated to providing the best care and welfare for the animals in its collection including animal keepers, animal behaviourists, aquarists, veterinarians, and biologists.

Mr. Philip Wong, Curator of Polar Adventure, said, “To help our penguins build their nests for laying and hatching eggs, our animal keepers provide them with up to two tons of pebbles, from which they build their own nests. Interestingly, as each penguin has its own preferences for pebbles, they often ‘steal’ from other penguins even though there are more than enough pebbles to go around.”

Penguin Fun Facts

Over 90 penguins from three species inhabit the South Pole Spectacular, including king penguins, the world’s second largest penguin, dramatic southern rockhopper penguins, one of the world’s tiniest penguins and white-bonneted, gentoo penguins, which sport unusual coloured eye markings. Unlike many other penguins, king penguins do not build nests, laying a single egg each time, the parents take turns to incubate and carry it around on their feet under their belly. Although southern rockhopper penguins are only 55 cm tall, they can jump to cliff tops around 1 m high. Gentoo penguins are the fastest swimmers among all birds, with a speed of up to 36 km per hour.

Whiskers’ Splash is a safe and fun environment for parents to have their little ones entertained, with its huge play zone structure and other exciting water features. The Whiskers & Friends-themed play structure consists of water jets, water sprays, bubblers, tunnels, water curtains and water slides including Bao Bao and Fluffi’s Double Fun, Redd’s Slide-and-Seek, Mark’s Slide-and-Seek, Whisker’s Swoop and Loop, Justin’s Swoop and Loop. For the younger adventurers to chill, they are welcome to have fun at the toddlers’ pool at Dougie’s Lagoon and Dougie’s Delta. Of course, you cannot miss the most popular one - the giant tipping water bucket!
